Supermarine Spitfire

Everyone has a favorite warbird: a plane they or someone they knew flew in, something from a classic movie, or even a plane that just looks great. Mustangs are at the top of a lot of people's lists, and no doubt they earned the title of the All-American Fighter. My grandpa John flew in B-25s during WW II, so that's definitely my favorite bomber. But when it comes to fighters, Spitfires take my breath away. I'm in good company: former MAN editor and current contributor Rich Uravitch says that the Spitfire his his favorite warbird, too: "There wasn't--and still isn't--a machine so trim, lithe and just plain sexy looking; truly a classic." Well said.
  MAN reader Ingvar Ísfeld Kristinsson, who hails from Iceland, sent in this photo of a Spitfire that I think looks like the real McCoy, but he swears that it's an RC model he shot last year. (Iceland is pretty high up on places I need to visit, and it just moved up a few notches!). This plane is gorgeous.
